Where it came from
Return the Favor was released in 2024 as part of the Outlaws of Thunder Junction set, specifically included within the Mystical Archive-style 'Big Score' bonus sheet. This card continues the tradition of thematic reprints and specialized frames that Wizards of the Coast utilizes to highlight iconic or highly functional mechanics within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. The design team sought to evoke the high-stakes, gunslinging atmosphere of the Thunder Junction plane, blending the established mechanics of spell-copying with the set's outlaw-themed aesthetic.
The card functions as a modern iteration of classic red instant-speed utility, allowing players to copy a spell or ability that targets a permanent or player. Its visual execution relies on the bold, stylized art direction characteristic of the set's bonus sheets, aiming to provide players with a functional tool that feels both mechanically potent and narratively grounded in the frontier setting. It was received by the player base as a versatile inclusion for Commander and constructed formats, valued for its low mana cost and its potential to swing the momentum of competitive matches.
