Where it came from
Brain Freeze was originally printed in the Scourge set in 2003, but this specific version was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages Mystical Archive. This subset was designed to highlight powerful instant and sorcery spells from Magic: The Gathering’s history, featuring exclusive Japanese-inspired art styles that differentiated them from the standard set cards.
The artwork for this version was illustrated by Japanese artist Kinoshi, who utilized a vibrant, stylized aesthetic that departs from the traditional grim tone of the original card. The design emphasizes the concept of mental overload, reflecting the card's mechanic where the target player mills cards from their library based on the number of storm copies created. It was well-received by players for its distinct visual departure and its inclusion as a highly sought-after utility card in eternal formats.
