Where it came from
Return to Action was released in 2022 as part of the Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty Art Series for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. These cards were distributed in collector boosters as a special showcase, featuring full-art illustrations without the traditional card frame or text boxes. The set itself marked a return to the plane of Kamigawa, reimagined through a cyberpunk aesthetic that blended traditional Japanese folklore with futuristic technology.
The artwork for this piece was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who is widely known for his dynamic contributions to the Magic: The Gathering universe. By removing the functional game text, the art series intended to highlight the intricate detail and environmental storytelling inherent in the Neon Dynasty visual identity. These cards have since become sought-after items for enthusiasts who prioritize the aesthetic mastery of modern fantasy illustration over the utilitarian aspects of competitive play.
