Where it came from
Revival of the Ancestors was released as part of the Tarkir block’s promotional cycle, specifically tied to the Dragonstorm events. Introduced in early 2015, this card belongs to a series of foil, alternate-art promotional versions of cards found in the Fate Reforged set, designed to incentivize participation in local hobby store tournaments and launch celebrations during the return to the plane of Tarkir.
The artwork for this particular printing was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, whose distinct style focuses on evocative character work and atmospheric lighting. Tasked with depicting the themes of Abzan funerary rites and the spiritual connection between the living and the dead on Tarkir, Villeneuve crafted a piece that emphasizes the solemnity and cultural weight of the ritual, which was well-received by players for its grounded, painterly aesthetic compared to more aggressive promotional cards of the period.
