Where it came from
Rewind was first printed in the Urza's Saga expansion in 1998, designed as a powerful blue instant that allowed players to counter a spell while simultaneously untapping their lands. This 'free' spell mechanic was a defining feature of its era, often balancing competitive play by rewarding players for managing their resources efficiently during an opponent's turn.
The Eighth Edition printing, which includes the version numbered 96, marked a significant milestone as the first core set to feature the modern card frame design. Illustrated by Greg Staples, the artwork reflects the transitional aesthetic of the period, updating the game’s visual identity while maintaining the mechanical integrity of the card's original design, which has remained a staple in control-oriented strategies for decades.
