Where it came from
Rewind was released as part of the Secret Lair Drop Series, a specialized line from Wizards of the Coast that offers curated, limited-time reprints of Magic: The Gathering cards. This specific version appeared in the 'Artist Series: Johannes Voss' drop, released in early 2021. The set was conceived to highlight the unique visual style of recurring contributors to the game, allowing artists more creative freedom than standard expansion sets typically afford.
The card features artwork by Johannes Voss, a German illustrator widely known for his ethereal, luminous aesthetic. Voss intended the piece to capture a sense of magical reversal and temporal distortion, utilizing his signature soft lighting and vibrant color palette. Upon its release, the drop was well-received by players and art collectors alike, praised for moving beyond traditional fantasy tropes in favor of a dreamlike, impressionistic quality that distinguished it from the card's original appearance.
