Where it came from
Rewind was released in 2005 as part of the Ninth Edition core set for Magic: The Gathering. As a core set, Ninth Edition served as an introductory collection, bringing together a curated selection of cards from previous expansions to keep fundamental mechanics and strategies accessible to newer players. The card itself, originally appearing in Urza's Saga, was chosen for its distinct utility as a blue instant that combines a counterspell with the advantage of untapping lands.
The artwork for this version was illustrated by Glen Angus, a prolific contributor to the game during the early 2000s. Angus opted for a kinetic, abstract aesthetic that visualized the concept of reversing time or undoing an action, distancing the card from the more literal fantasy illustrations common in the era. Upon its inclusion in Ninth Edition, it was received as a reliable staple for control-based deck archetypes, valued for its efficiency in maintaining board presence while keeping mana open for subsequent turns.
