Where it came from
The Rivals of Ixalan Checklist card was released in 2018 as part of the trading card game Magic: The Gathering. These checklist cards were introduced by Wizards of the Coast to assist players in tracking double-faced cards, which had mechanics printed on both sides. Because the opaque backs of standard cards were required for gameplay, these checklists served as placeholders to be marked and played in a deck, allowing players to represent the transformable cards without revealing their identity while hidden in a library or hand.
The design of the card emphasizes functional clarity, utilizing a minimalist layout that provides space for players to check off which double-faced card is being used. Consistent with the aesthetic of the Ixalan block, which drew heavy inspiration from Mesoamerican cultures, seafaring exploration, and dinosaur themes, the checklist card maintains the visual language of the set's interface. While not a piece of high art, it is widely recognized by enthusiasts for its practical role in navigating the specific mechanical complexity of the Ixalan expansion.
