Where it came from
Roller Coaster was released in 2022 as part of Unfinity, the fourth silver-bordered expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was conceived as a lighthearted, science-fiction themed draft environment that introduced the concept of Attraction cards. These are a unique permanent type designed to function as an off-board deck, injecting a sense of chaos and carnival-like randomness into the traditional gameplay mechanics.
The art for this card, illustrated by D. Alexander Gregory, leans into the retro-futuristic aesthetic prevalent throughout the set. Gregory was tasked with capturing the whimsical, high-stakes energy of a cosmic theme park, utilizing vibrant colors and dynamic angles to make the card feel like a centerpiece of the Attraction deck. Upon release, the set received mixed but largely positive feedback from the community, with many players praising the imaginative, board-game-inspired mechanics despite the inherent complexity of tracking them during games.
