Rootwalla first appeared in the Exodus expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 1998, designed as a creature with a distinct 'pump' ability that allowed players to sink mana into it to increase its power and toughness for a single turn. It became a hallmark of the green color identity, emphasizing the raw, efficient growth common to the forest-aligned faction of the game. Its return in the Ninth Edition core set in 2005 marked a continuation of this legacy, providing players with a reliable, cost-effective creature that maintained relevance throughout the middle stages of a match.

The Ninth Edition illustration was provided by Roger Raupp, a veteran artist known for his contribution to the early visual language of the game. Raupp’s depiction captures the creature's feral, reptilian nature, leaning into the aesthetic of a primitive, hulking beast dwelling within a lush, hostile environment. The card was well-received by the player base for its straightforward utility, serving as a staple common card that helped define the limited environment of the core set release.
