Rootwater Alligator

The Rootwater Alligator was released in 1998 as part of the Exodus expansion, the third and final set in the Rath Cycle of Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed to round out the mechanics introduced in Tempest and Stronghold, focusing on the dark, artificial plane of Rath. As a common creature, it was intended to populate the limited play environment, providing a functional, aggressive blue creature that reflected the predatory nature of the set's swampy, hostile biomes.

The card’s visual identity was crafted by artist Stephen Daniele, who leaned into the dark, organic aesthetic characteristic of the era’s card illustrations. Daniele's design emphasizes the creature's aquatic, stealthy nature, utilizing a muted palette to convey its habitat. While the card is a standard piece of the game's mid-nineties mechanical history rather than a marquee collectible, it remains a recognizable example of early Magic card design and the specific tonal shift the game underwent during the late nineties.
