Rotting Regisaur

Rotting Regisaur was introduced as part of the Core Set 2020 expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released by Wizards of the Coast in July 2019. It was designed as a high-risk, high-reward creature, intended to challenge players with a powerful stat line balanced by a restrictive upkeep cost that forces the discard of a card each turn. The card quickly became a staple in black-based aggressive decks, as its efficient mana cost allowed it to dominate the board early if the player could mitigate the card disadvantage.

The creature’s visceral aesthetic, illustrating a decaying, hulking dinosaur, was rendered by artist Svetlin Velinov. Velinov’s work on the piece focused on the intersection of biological horror and primal ferocity, emphasizing the rotting flesh and skeletal structure of the creature to match its mechanical flavor of consuming resources to sustain its massive size.
