Where it came from
The Royal Warden card was introduced in the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set, released by Wizards of the Coast in October 2022 as part of the Universes Beyond series. This collaboration brought the lore and aesthetic of the Warhammer 40,000 tabletop wargame into the mechanics of Magic: The Gathering, specifically within the Necron Dynasties deck. The card depicts a member of the Necron race, an ancient civilization of metallic, skeletal warriors that serve as a cornerstone of the Warhammer setting.
The design of the card emphasizes the character's role as a tactical leader, featuring artwork that captures the cold, mechanical aesthetic characteristic of the Necrons. The illustration focuses on the Warden's resilient, unfeeling nature, aligning with the deck's focus on reanimation and long-term durability. Upon release, the set was well-received by fans of both franchises for its ability to translate complex tabletop rules into the interactive, resource-based gameplay of Magic, while staying faithful to the brutal tone of the 41st millennium.
