Where it came from
The Rukh Egg first appeared in the Arabian Nights expansion in 1993, later being reprinted with new artwork in Ninth Edition in 2005. It was designed during the early development of Magic: The Gathering as part of an effort to weave top-down flavor from Middle Eastern folklore into the game's mechanics, creating a thematic creature that required a specific condition—the egg being destroyed—to hatch into a powerful flyer.
The Ninth Edition illustration was created by artist Greg Staples, who moved away from the more literal interpretations found in earlier editions to provide a darker, more visceral look at the creature.
