Where it came from
Runeforge Champion was released in early 2021 as part of the promotional suite for the Magic: The Gathering set Kaldheim. This set drew heavily from Norse mythology, focusing on themes of ice, battle, and legendary sagas. The card was designed as an integral piece of the set's Equipment-synergy mechanics, serving as a specialized tutor that allows players to search their libraries for specific runes or equipment to bolster their board state.
The card features artwork by Anna Steinbauer, who is known for her contributions to the high-fantasy aesthetic of the game. Her illustration for this card emphasizes the rugged, frost-bitten atmosphere of the plane of Kaldheim, depicting the Champion in gear indicative of the set’s metal-work motifs. Upon its release, it was well-received by players focusing on Commander and Standard formats for its efficiency in navigating deck-specific toolkits, quickly becoming a staple for white-aligned equipment strategies.
