Where it came from
Runeforge Champion was released in early 2021 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Kaldheim. The card was designed to support the set's thematic focus on Norse mythology and the equipment-based gameplay archetype, functioning as a tutor that allows players to search their libraries for specific Aura or Equipment cards. Its inclusion in the set reflects the design team's goal of enabling players to more consistently utilize the powerful artifact and enchantment synergy central to the Kaldheim play environment.
The card features artwork by the illustrator Lie Setiawan, who utilized a bold, cinematic style to capture the warrior aesthetic typical of the realm of Kaldheim. The visual design emphasizes the character's mastery over armaments, reinforcing its mechanical utility. Upon release, the card was received as a stable and reliable utility piece in constructed formats, particularly appreciated for its efficiency in decks that rely on tutoring specific tools to secure a tactical advantage on the battlefield.
