Provenance

Where it came from

Sacrifice was released as part of the Unlimited Edition set for Magic: The Gathering in 1993, shortly after the game's initial debut. Created by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the card was part of an effort to provide a more accessible print run following the swift exhaustion of the original Alpha and Beta limited sets. Its design reflects the early experimental phase of the game's mechanics, where the trade-off between sacrificing a creature and gaining temporary mana resources was intended to reward players who could leverage death triggers or graveyard synergy.

The artwork for Sacrifice was illustrated by Anson Maddocks, one of the original artists whose distinctive, often dark and moody style defined the aesthetic of early Magic. Maddocks' work on this card depicts the grim ritualistic themes prevalent in the game's formative years. While the card was not considered a power-level staple in competitive play, it remains a notable piece of Magic history for its role in establishing the black color philosophy of sacrificing one's own resources for a greater, immediate gain.
