Where it came from
The Sacrifice card from the International Collectors' Edition was released in 1993 as part of a non-collectible boxed set intended to introduce the Magic: The Gathering game to international markets. These cards feature gold-bordered backs and distinct square corners, distinguishing them from the standard game pieces used in professional play. This set provided players with a comprehensive selection of cards from the early expansions, allowing them to experience the game’s core mechanics without the variability of booster packs.
The artwork for Sacrifice was originally illustrated by Dan Frazier, whose work is synonymous with the early aesthetic of the game. Frazier utilized a evocative, illustrative style that leaned into the darker, high-fantasy tone of the period. Within the community, the International Collectors' Edition is viewed primarily as a functional archive of the game's nascent design philosophy, prized by enthusiasts for its historical role in preserving the art and card functionality of the initial releases.
