Where it came from
Saheeli's Directive was released in 2018 as part of the Commander 2018 set, specifically featured in the 'Exquisite Invention' preconstructed deck. This card highlights the character Saheeli Rai, an artificer planeswalker from the plane of Kaladesh known for her mastery over metalwork and construct creation. The set was designed to support artifact-centric strategies, providing players with powerful tools to ramp into high-mana cost machinery and board-state advantages.
The artwork was created by Lake Hurwitz, who aimed to capture the essence of Saheeli’s mechanical ingenuity through a vibrant, kinetic display of energy and assembly. Within the broader Commander community, the card is recognized for its utility in 'artifact matters' decks, as its X-cost mechanic allows for a significant swing in board presence by pulling artifacts directly from the library to the battlefield. It remains a functional, thematic staple for players building around themes of invention and industrial expansion.
