Where it came from
Sakashima's Protege was released in 2020 as part of the Commander Legends expansion, the first set designed specifically for the Commander format. Within the game's lore, the card depicts a character mimicking the illusionist Sakashima, playing into the set's broader theme of legendary figures and the strategic importance of copying powerful permanents on the battlefield.
The card was illustrated by David Palumbo, who employed his signature atmospheric style to capture the fluid, deceptive nature of the character. Its design is centered on the 'cascade' mechanic, a hallmark of the set that encourages high-impact plays, which made the card a distinct inclusion for players looking to replicate key threats during intense multiplayer matches.
