Where it came from
Samite Healer was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Alpha set, the very first printing of Magic: The Gathering. Created by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the game was conceived as a portable, collectible card game that could be played quickly between rounds of other games. This white-aligned creature card was designed to offer players a repeatable damage-prevention ability, fitting into the defensive and restorative theme characteristic of the game's early white cards.
The card’s illustration was provided by artist Quinton Hoover, who contributed several iconic pieces to the game's early aesthetic. Hoover utilized a distinctive, flowing style that helped define the visual language of the inaugural set. During the game’s infancy, the art was often commissioned with significant creative freedom, and Hoover’s interpretation of the Samite Healer became a recognized staple for players building decks focused on longevity and resource management during the game's rapid rise in popularity.
