Where it came from
The Samite Healer, appearing as collector number 38 in the 1993 Collectors' Edition set, serves as a direct reprint of the card originally featured in the Alpha and Beta sets of Magic: The Gathering. This edition was produced by Wizards of the Coast as a non-tournament legal set, intended primarily for players who wanted to experience the full breadth of the game's early card pool without the prohibitive cost of original tournament-legal printings. The gold-bordered backs distinguish these cards from their counterparts, marking them clearly as promotional or collector-focused items.
The art for the Samite Healer was rendered by artist Dan Frazier, a foundational contributor to the game's early visual identity. Frazier’s design captures the traditional fantasy aesthetic that defined early Magic, focusing on the cleric archetype common to white-aligned cards of the era. The card’s ability, which allows a player to prevent damage dealt to a creature or player, became a quintessential example of white mana's defensive utility, making it a familiar and enduring staple for those who appreciate the game's formative design history.
