Where it came from
Sanctuary Warden was released as part of the Streets of New Capenna set in 2022, a Magic: The Gathering expansion inspired by the aesthetics of 1920s Art Deco and film noir. The card represents the angelic guardians of the city, designed to fit the set's themes of power, protection, and urban intrigue. This particular version is a promotional variant featuring alternate frame treatments, which were created to highlight the intricate, gold-accented visual identity central to the New Capenna setting.
The artwork for Sanctuary Warden was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game known for a distinctively ethereal and luminant style. Voss intended to evoke a sense of divine authority and grace, utilizing the bright, warm color palette that characterizes the Brokers faction within the game's lore. The card was well received by the player community, particularly in competitive Commander formats, due to its efficient synergy between token generation and card draw mechanics.
