Sandsteppe Citadel

Sandsteppe Citadel was originally introduced in the 2014 Khans of Tarkir expansion, designed as part of a cycle of tri-colored lands representing the Abzan Houses. It was created to provide players with a reliable mana base in the Abzan colors of white, black, and green, featuring a mechanical identity that focused on durability and attrition. This version, appearing in the Phyrexia: All Will Be One Commander set, serves as a thematic inclusion within the supplemental products designed to support the broader Magic: The Gathering Commander format.

The artwork for the card captures the fortified architecture of the Abzan, characterized by its resilient, desert-bound stone structures. While individual artists contribute unique interpretations across different printings, the card’s design serves the consistent functional goal of allowing access to three colors of mana at the cost of entering the battlefield tapped. Its inclusion in later Commander sets is a standard practice for ensuring players have accessible utility lands to facilitate multi-colored deck construction.
