Where it came from
Sapling Nursery is a card originally featured in the Lorwyn expansion of Magic: The Gathering, released in 2007. This specific version is a promotional printing released under the Lorwyn Eclipsed banner, a designation for cards distributed through sanctioned tournament play or special events during the set's cycle. The card itself represents the tribal themes prevalent in Lorwyn, focusing on the game's creature-type mechanics, specifically the interactions between Treefolk and Sapling tokens.
The artwork, designed to reflect the whimsical yet dangerous pastoral aesthetic of the Lorwyn plane, was crafted to fit the set's deep-woods folk-horror inspiration. The design process for Lorwyn aimed to move away from the high-fantasy tropes of previous sets, favoring a folk-tale sensibility characterized by lush, saturated illustrations. Upon release, cards from the Lorwyn block were generally well-received for their strong internal synergy and the distinct identity of the plane, which remains one of the most recognizable in the game's history.
