Where it came from
Sarkhan, Soul Aflame is a legendary creature card released in the 2023 expansion March of the Machine: The Aftermath. This set was designed as a narrative epilogue to the sprawling Phyrexian Invasion arc, focusing on the individual fates of various planeswalkers and legendary characters across the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. The design team created these cards to provide closure to long-standing character arcs, allowing players to see how major figures adapted to the fundamental changes brought about by the end of the conflict.
The artwork for this card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who depicted Sarkhan Vol in a state of emotional release and draconic manifestation. The card's mechanics were built around his signature connection to dragons, rewarding players for casting dragon spells by allowing them to copy the creatures. Upon release, the card was received as a flavorful addition to tribal dragon decks, highlighting Sarkhan's complex history with the tempest and his ongoing evolution as a planeswalker.
