Where it came from
Sarkhan, Soul Aflame was released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set March of the Machine: The Aftermath. This set was designed to serve as an epilogue to the expansive Phyrexian invasion storyline, focusing on the shifting status quo of legendary characters across the multiverse. The card depicts the planeswalker Sarkhan Vol, a character defined by his deep connection to dragons and his complicated history with time manipulation, captured here in a moment of reflection following the conclusion of the war.
The artwork for this card was created by illustrative artist Magali Villeneuve, who is well-regarded for her work within the fantasy genre and specifically for her contributions to the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic. Her design emphasizes the character's draconic influence and internal state, moving away from high-action combat art to highlight the character-driven narrative of the post-invasion era. Within the player community, the card was received as a niche utility piece for tribal dragon decks, valued for its ability to reduce costs and grant temporary copy effects to other dragon spells.
