Where it came from
Sarkhan, Soul Aflame was released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set March of the Machine: The Aftermath. This set was designed as an epilogue to the game's expansive Phyrexian Invasion storyline, focusing on the immediate aftermath for key planeswalkers and the multiverse at large. The card depicts Sarkhan Vol, a recurring character known for his deep connection to dragons, in a moment reflecting his refined mastery over draconic magic.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured Sarkhan in a dynamic, fiery pose consistent with his established aesthetic in the franchise. Mechanically, the design leans into Sarkhan's thematic identity by rewarding the player for summoning dragon creatures. Like much of the Aftermath set, the card served to provide narrative closure and character-focused mechanics rather than being part of a traditional booster-drafting experience.
