Where it came from
Released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth, this card depicts the wizard Saruman following his transformation into a leader of industry and dark magic. The card represents a pivot in the character's narrative trajectory, moving away from his traditional white robes to a fragmented, multicolored aesthetic that signals his abandonment of the White Council's principles.
The artwork was commissioned from artist Justine Mara Anderson, who sought to capture the volatile and shifting nature of Saruman’s descent. The design reflects the broader aesthetic direction of the set, which aimed to translate J.R.R. Tolkien’s dense mythology into the tactical framework of a trading card game. Upon its release, the card was received as a mechanically flavorful representation of Saruman's chaotic influence, often highlighted by players for its vibrant color palette and thematic adherence to the source material.
