What it does

Ward—Discard an enchantment, instant, or sorcery card.

Whenever you cast your second spell each turn, each opponent mills two cards. When one or more cards are milled this way, exile target enchantment, instant, or sorcery card with equal or lesser mana value than that spell from an opponent's graveyard. Copy the exiled card. You may cast the copy without paying its mana cost.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Saruman of Many Colors card was released in 2023 as part of The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth, a collaborative expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Produced by Wizards of the Coast, this set was designed to integrate the lore of J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium into the game's mechanics, offering a reimagining of iconic characters through the lens of fantasy illustration.

The artwork for this specific card was commissioned from artist Justine Mara Andersen, who sought to capture Saruman at the height of his prideful transition from 'the White' to his self-proclaimed status as 'Many Colors.' The design utilizes a distinctive visual style common to the set's portrayal of the wizard's shifting allegiance and burgeoning obsession with power, and it was generally well-received by fans for its thematic alignment with the source text.
