Provenance

Where it came from

The Saruman of Many Colors card, specifically the promotional variant numbered 223s, was released as part of the Magic: The Gathering 'The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth' set in 2023. This expansion marked a significant collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Middle-earth Enterprises, bringing J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium into the game’s multiverse. The card was designed to reflect Saruman’s shift from the White Wizard to a figure of fractured, kaleidoscopic ambition, mirroring his betrayal of the Istari order.

The card features artwork by Anna Steinbauer, who utilized a vivid color palette to represent Saruman’s title and his corrupted nature. The design focuses on the character’s ornate, shimmering robes and his imposing posture within Orthanc. It was well-received by players and collectors alike for its distinct visual departure from traditional interpretations of the character, serving as both a mechanically impactful card in gameplay and a striking piece of illustrative storytelling for fans of the franchise.
