Where it came from
Hushwing Gryff was introduced in the Magic: The Gathering set Commander 2016, released in November 2016. The card was specifically featured in the 'Breed Lethality' preconstructed deck, which focused on the proliferate mechanic and complex creature interactions. Its inclusion in a Commander-focused product provided players with a powerful utility creature capable of shutting down 'enter-the-battlefield' triggered abilities, a common and potent strategy in the multiplayer format.
The card was illustrated by the artist Magali Villeneuve, who sought to capture the grace and imposing presence of a griffin. The design emphasizes the creature's silent, ethereal nature, reflecting its mechanical role as a disruptor. Upon release, it was well-received by competitive players for its efficiency as a hate-bear, securing its place as a staple in various white-aligned decks for its ability to neutralize threats without requiring a significant mana investment.
