Where it came from
Necropotence was originally introduced in the 1996 Magic: The Gathering expansion Ice Age, designed by Richard Garfield and illustrated by Sandra Everitt. The card became infamous for its unique ability to trade life points for cards, a mechanic that fundamentally altered the game's competitive landscape and led to the creation of the dominant 'Necro' deck archetype. It is widely considered one of the most powerful and controversial cards in the history of the game.
The version from the Iconic Masters set, released in 2017, features updated artwork by Volkan Baga. This printing was part of a set specifically designed to showcase legendary cards from throughout Magic's history, reprinting them with modern card frames and refreshed aesthetics to appeal to both long-time players and those interested in the historical impact of iconic mechanical designs.
