Savannah Lions

Savannah Lions was released as part of the Limited Edition Beta set in 1993, serving as a foundational creature card for the early Magic: The Gathering ecosystem. Published by Wizards of the Coast, Beta acted as a corrective second printing of the inaugural Alpha set, refining rules text and fixing minor production errors that occurred during the initial launch. It captures the game's nascent design philosophy, which prioritized simple, aggressive mechanics that would define the White mana color identity for years to come.

The card’s illustration was produced by artist Jesper Myrfors, who served as the original art director for the game. Myrfors aimed for a raw, evocative aesthetic that would distinguish the fledgling trading card game from traditional fantasy tropes of the era. Upon its release, the card was widely received as a staple for competitive play, eventually becoming a hallmark of 'White Weenie' deck archetypes due to its efficient power-to-cost ratio.
