What it does

The traditional kings of the jungle command a healthy respect in other climates as well. Relying mainly on their stealth and speed, Savannah Lions can take a victim by surprise, even in the endless flat plains of their homeland.

Provenance

Where it came from

The International Collectors' Edition (ICE) set was produced in 1996 as a non-tournament-legal print run of the original Magic: The Gathering base set. Intended as a way for players to enjoy the game’s iconic artwork and card designs without the prohibitive costs of the original limited-edition printings, the cards are distinguishable by their gold-bordered backs and squared corners, which prevent them from being played in sanctioned competitive matches.

Savannah Lions, a staple of white-aligned aggressive decks, was originally illustrated by Sandra Everingham. Her design for the card captured the swift, predatory nature of the creature, becoming a quintessential example of the 'weenie' archetype in Magic history. While the ICE printing is purely for display or casual play, it serves as a preserved artifact of the game's early aesthetic and design philosophy during the mid-nineties.
