Scalding Tarn

Scalding Tarn was originally released as a rare land card in the 2009 Zendikar expansion, representing a major shift in land design by allowing players to search their library for specific colors of mana at the cost of life. The Zendikar Expeditions version, designated as collector number 22, was released in 2015 as a premium, foil-etched masterwork found randomly in Battle for Zendikar booster packs. This release marked the introduction of the Expeditions series, a high-end chase set that reimagined iconic land cards with new, ornate borders and full-art imagery to celebrate the return to the plane of Zendikar.

The visual design for the Zendikar Expeditions variant was crafted to feel like a priceless relic of the world, utilizing a minimalist, elegant aesthetic that prioritizes the expansive artwork over traditional card framing. By stripping away standard elements and introducing a metallic, embossed foil treatment, the designers sought to create an artifact-like experience for the player. The set was met with widespread enthusiasm from the Magic: The Gathering community, becoming a benchmark for premium collectible card design and setting a precedent for subsequent 'Masterpiece' series releases.
