Scalding Tarn

Scalding Tarn was originally introduced in the 2009 expansion Zendikar as part of a cycle of land cards known as fetch lands. These cards are highly valued in competitive play for their ability to search a player's library for specific land types, providing essential color fixing and thinning the deck. The 2017 Modern Masters printing, illustrated by artist James Paick, reimagined the card with updated art that reflects the harsh, volcanic terrain of the Zendikar plane. This specific reprint was part of a limited-run set designed to provide players with access to staple cards within the Modern format.

The design of the Modern Masters 2017 version maintains the mechanical identity of the original while showcasing the evolution of Magic: The Gathering's visual language. James Paick's interpretation leans into the high-fantasy aesthetic of the game, emphasizing the turbulent, geothermal energy of the Tarn. When this set was released, it was met with significant interest from the player community, as the inclusion of high-demand lands like Scalding Tarn was seen as a vital step in keeping the Modern format accessible to a broader base of players.
