Scavenging Ghoul

Scavenging Ghoul first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield. As one of the early black-aligned creatures, it embodied the game's core mechanical themes of graveyard interaction, allowing players to exile creature cards from graveyards to increase its own power and toughness. The original illustration by Dan Frazier leaned into the grim, high-fantasy aesthetic that defined the game's infancy, portraying a hunched, necromantic figure picking through the remains of the fallen.

The 30th Anniversary Edition, released in 2022, serves as a commemorative, non-tournament-legal reprint of cards from the original Limited Edition Alpha. The inclusion of Scavenging Ghoul in this collection preserves the visual legacy of the game's origins, featuring the classic art and card frame design that helped launch the trading card game genre.
