Scavenging Ghoul

Scavenging Ghoul first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, but the version from the Summer Magic set, also known as the Edgar set, holds a unique place in card collecting history. This specific iteration was part of a limited print run intended to correct errors from previous sets, but due to a widespread recall caused by quality control issues, the vast majority of the inventory was destroyed. The cards that survived the recall are incredibly rare, making them highly sought after by completionists and high-end collectors who value the scarcity born from such a tumultuous distribution period.

The artwork for Scavenging Ghoul was illustrated by Jesper Myrfors, who served as the game's original art director. His design captures the bleak, gothic aesthetic that defined the early visual identity of the game, utilizing a visceral, unsettling depiction of a grave-dwelling creature. While the card's mechanics—allowing players to pump its power by consuming creatures in the graveyard—were straightforward, the somber and evocative style of the original illustration remains a defining example of the early nineties dark fantasy art direction that helped launch the franchise.
