Sculpting Steel

Sculpting Steel was first introduced in the 2003 Mirrodin set, conceptualized as a versatile utility artifact capable of duplicating other metallic components on the battlefield. The design intent was to capture the fluid, adaptive nature of the plane of Mirrodin, where the environment itself was composed of living metal. By allowing a player to enter the battlefield as a copy of any other artifact, the card became a fundamental tool for decks relying on synergy and resource replication.

For the Commander 2021 release, artist Heather Hudson provided new visual direction for the card. Hudson, a long-time contributor to the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic, focused on a sleek, high-fantasy industrial design that emphasized the malleable nature of the Steel. This version was well-received by the player base for its clarity and the way it honored the card’s original mechanical identity while fitting into the contemporary visual language of the Commander product line.
