Sculpting Steel

Sculpting Steel was originally introduced in the Mirrodin expansion in 2003 as part of a set centered on the mechanics and aesthetics of artifacts. Designed to mirror the ability of the classic Clone card but specifically for the artifact-heavy environment of the Mirrodin plane, the card was intended to provide players with strategic flexibility, allowing them to copy the most powerful board presence available. Its inclusion in Tenth Edition, released in 2007, served to keep this utility piece in the core rotation for standard play during a period when the game was emphasizing broader accessibility to staple effects.

The artwork by Heather Hudson captures the ethereal, shifting nature of the card's function, depicting a metallic construct in a state of fluid transmutation. Hudson, a prolific contributor to the game's visual identity, utilized a polished, reflective style that complemented the thematic focus on refined metalwork prevalent in the Mirrodin block.
