Scute Mob

Scute Mob was first introduced in the 2009 expansion Conflux, part of the Shards of Alara block, and later featured in the 2010 Duel Decks: Zendikar vs. Eldrazi. It was designed as a creature that grows in power over time, reflecting the growth themes of the Naya shard, which focused on large creatures and forest-based synergy. Its inclusion in the Duel Decks series was intended to provide a mid-to-late game threat for the Zendikar-themed deck, balancing against the massive, game-ending Eldrazi threats.

The card was illustrated by the duo Zoltan Boros and Gabor Szikszai, known for their collaborative work on many Magic: The Gathering cards during this era. Their design portrays the creature as a swarm of small insects coalescing into a single, formidable entity, visually capturing the mechanical concept of the card adding counters to itself each turn. The card was well-received by players for its ability to dominate games if left unanswered, becoming a staple in casual green-based decks for years following its release.
