Sea of Sand

Sea of Sand was released as part of the Planechase Anthology collection in 2016, serving as a reprint of the card originally introduced in the 2012 Planechase set. The card functions as a plane card in the Planechase format, a variant of Magic: The Gathering that adds a dimension of spatial movement to gameplay, allowing players to traverse different worlds of the multiverse. The design intends to evoke the desolate, shifting nature of a desert environment, with mechanics that emphasize the harshness of the terrain.

The card features artwork by Cliff Childs, who was commissioned to capture the arid and unforgiving atmosphere of the plane. His illustration focuses on the sprawling, sun-bleached dunes, reflecting the aesthetic direction of the Planechase series, which sought to immerse players in exotic and often hostile landscapes. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional addition for enthusiasts of the variant, noted for its specific tactical impact on resource management during the game.
