Where it came from
Sea of Sand was released in 2009 as part of the Planechase supplemental set for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents the desert plane of Rabiah, a setting deeply rooted in the imagery of One Thousand and One Nights, which has appeared in various forms throughout the game's history. As a Plane card, it was designed to introduce dynamic, environment-based gameplay mechanics where players could shift the rules of the board by traveling between different dimensions.
The art was created by Chippy, a prolific fantasy illustrator who has contributed extensively to the game. In designing the piece, the artist captured the harsh, expansive, and shifting nature of the arid landscape to provide a visual anchor for the mechanics of the card, which forces players to sacrifice resources as they navigate the unforgiving terrain. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players looking to add narrative depth and strategic variety to their multiplayer experiences.
