What it does
Any time you could cast a sorcery, you may exile a nonland card from your hand with X time counters on it, where X is its mana value. If the exiled card doesn't have suspend, it gains suspend. (At the beginning of its owner's upkeep, they remove a time counter. When the last is removed, the player may cast it without paying its mana cost. If it's a creature, it has haste.)
Whenever chaos ensues, remove two time counters from each suspended card you own.

Where it came from
Talon Gates originated as a plane card in the Planechase 2012 release, a set designed to expand the multiplayer format by introducing dynamic, shifting environments into Magic: The Gathering. The card was conceived to reflect the jagged, defensive architecture of the Grixis shard, a world defined by decay and ruthless survival, where the layout serves both as a strategic chokepoint and a thematic element of the plane’s hostile landscape.
The visual design, credited to artist Svetlin Velinov, emphasizes the brutalist and intimidating aesthetic of the Grixis aesthetic. By focusing on the towering, imposing structures, the illustration captures the claustrophobic tension intended for Planechase gameplay. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional tool for controlling creature movement, with its mechanics praised for effectively translating the flavor of a defensive fortification into the game’s board-state logic.
