Provenance

Where it came from

Sea Serpent was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Beta set for Magic: The Gathering, the world's first trading card game. Developed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the game emerged from the intersection of mathematics, gaming culture, and fantasy literature. As one of the earliest expansions, Beta was produced to meet the intense demand for the game following the sell-out success of the initial Alpha run.

The artwork for Sea Serpent was created by Quinton Hoover, one of the game's most iconic early contributors. Hoover aimed to capture the imposing nature of the creature through his distinct, fluid style, which favored soft edges and expressive character work. The card represents the early aesthetic era of the game, where fantastical creatures were grounded in the evocative, experimental art direction that defined the transition from traditional role-playing games to the collectible card format.
