Where it came from
Balance was released in 1993 as part of Limited Edition Beta, the second printing of the original Magic: The Gathering base set. Created by Richard Garfield, the card was designed to be a powerful equalizer in competitive play, forcing players to discard cards and sacrifice lands and creatures to match the player with the lowest count.
