Where it came from
Seal of Removal was introduced in the Modern Horizons 2 expansion, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2021. This set was designed specifically for the Modern format, aiming to introduce powerful, nostalgia-driven cards that bypass the restrictions of standard set rotations. The card itself functions as a functional reprint of an older card, originally known as Seal of Removal from the Nemesis set, and was included here to provide players with a versatile, low-cost bounce effect that fits into tempo-oriented control strategies.
The card’s visual design for the Modern Horizons 2 release was handled by artist Johannes Voss, who updated the classic look with a refined, contemporary aesthetic. Voss sought to emphasize the magical, ethereal quality of the enchantment, utilizing a color palette that aligns with modern card framing standards. The card was well-received by the competitive community for its utility and the clean, updated artwork, which maintains the thematic essence of the original while appealing to both legacy fans and new players.
