Where it came from
The Séance Board card appears in the Duskmourn: House of Horror Commander set, released in 2024. This set draws heavy inspiration from 1980s horror tropes, specifically focusing on the claustrophobic and supernatural environment of a haunted, ever-expanding house. As part of this thematic exploration, the card leans into the occult and spiritualist aesthetics that define the plane of Duskmourn, serving as a functional artifact within the game's mechanics that references classic horror ghost-communication tools.
The illustration is the work of artist Scott Murphy, who utilized a distressed, vintage visual language to convey the eerie nature of the board. The design captures the tactile feel of an antique wood-carved planchette and board, fitting perfectly into the set's broader mission to evoke nostalgia for classic slasher films and supernatural thrillers. The card was well-received by players for its flavorful integration of trope-heavy horror elements into the strategic gameplay of Magic: The Gathering.
