Where it came from
Séance was released in February 2012 as part of the Dark Ascension expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set within the gothic horror world of Innistrad, the card reflects the expansion's focus on the struggles of humanity against encroaching darkness and the restless spirits of the dead. It was designed to mechanically simulate the act of temporarily summoning a spectral echo of a fallen creature from the graveyard, reinforcing the set's graveyard-centric gameplay themes.
The card features illustration by Igor Kieryluk, whose work on the set captures a somber, ethereal aesthetic consistent with the dark fantasy tone of the plane. The art depicts a ritualistic gathering designed to commune with the afterlife, utilizing a muted, ghostly color palette that emphasizes the melancholy nature of the enchantment. Upon its release, the card was noted by players for its unique combo potential, even if it remained a niche utility card within the broader competitive landscape of the time.
